Axminster carpets are a basic weaving style that originated in 1757 in a factory in Axminster, England, which supplied British imitation Turkish carpets, knotted and tufted in an oriental manner. Axminster carpets were made of wool knotted in the woolen warp and flax or hemp woven into the weft, with Renaissance architectural or floral patterns. With the introduction of industrial looms, Axminster Carpet Factory closed in 1835. The name exists as a general term for all machine-made carpets that have a chenille or velvet-like pile.
