The etymology of the word carpet is from Old Italian "Carpita", or Carpire meaning to pluck.
Carpita was a term that was often used interchangeably with the term “rug” and some define carpet as a rug that stretches to each wall in a room. Historically, the term was also applied to table and wall coverings.
There are several types of carpets including woven, needle felt, knotted, tufted, hooked and flat weave. There are the three types of woven carpeting which is produces on a loom and is very similar to fabric. And similar to fabric, the weave design can utilize many types of yarns and various colors to produce stunning designs as well as intricate textures. Often due to the design intricacies slowing manufacturing, these are among the most expensive carpets available. But today we will discuss main about one of the three forms of woven carpet -. Axminster
Axminster Carpet offers the most variety in color up to 12 colors providing positively the most options in design potential. There simply is no more versatile process in the carpet manufacturing industry. There are three types of broadloom carpet construction available and Bloomsburg Carpet is the only American carpet manufacturer to have all three types of looms in house. Historically these carpets are believed to have descended to England with Flemish immigrants fleeing persecution. Most of the earliest examples of these carpets bear dates or coats of arms allowing historians to date the process back to the 16th century. Eventually the process of hand weaving symmetrical knots in wool on a weft of flax or hemp became mechanized into the modern day Axminster process which was founded in Axminster, England in 1755 by a cloth weaver Thomas Whitty. The Whitty factory produced true Axminster carpets until it closed in 1835. The name Axminster is now a generic name for carpets with a pile created by the same technique used to make velvet or chenille.
There are many benefits to Axminster Carpet, beyond color and design choices. Some of the other benefits include pattern clarity, ease of maintenance, and sound absorption. When weaving the backing and face in a single process you eliminate any potential for de-lamination that occurs in lesser processes. De-lamination can lead to premature breakdown of the carpet face and produce ugly lumps and ripples in heavy traffic areas. The singular weaving process creates a thick, strong durable carpet. The fact that Bloomsburg’s Gripper-Jacquard looms allow for pinpoint precision design, with even the most intricate of patterns running through the entire length of the face fibers ensures maximum carpet life via superior design. When you consider modern CAD design potential, the durability and numerous features engineered into modern fibers, a 20-30 year lifespan for custom designed high end Axminster carpet installations is not uncommon, even in high traffic commercial office spaces.
A professional designer can work closely with manufacturers to ensure precision design and superior quality in every luxury woven carpet you order. In our previous blog we discuss the importance of working with professional designers and sales agents who are not only familiar with the product but installers and regional maintenance needs to help you choose the perfect materials, weave and design for your needs.
