Things to Consider When Choosing Carpet for the Stairs

Putting carpet on the stairs is different than having it installed in a room with less traffic. When choosing which type of carpet you should use, remember to think about the following factors before sticking to your decision.

Quality

Stairs are the highest traffic area in any home, not only because they are often used. The impact of foot traffic is greater on stairs than on flat areas due to the added force of gravity as you descend the stairs. This means that you should be using the highest quality carpet and cushion you can afford. While an upgraded carpet and pad will be an additional cost up front, they will most definitely save you money in the long run, as the carpet will need to be replaced less frequently.

Carpet pile

A low, dense pile carpet is the most forgiving on stairs, hiding footprints and vacuum marks and not flattening underfoot. Berber, woven and loop-pile carpets all contain looped fibers. Good quality carpets that use heavier yarns and fibers and have a tight weave can better withstand tears and pulls. However, if you have pets with claws, especially those that like to scratch at surfaces, a better option is a twist pile, which will not snag or fray like a loop.

Color

Pick a carpet color that covers dirt and stains. You may love creams and ivories, but your stairs won’t. High foot traffic increases the likelihood that your light carpeting will soon look dingy. Find a happy medium by selecting deeper neutrals, like taupe and coffee. Some manufacturers offer heathered shades—subtle blends of complementary colors—that will camouflage dirt more readily than monochrome carpets.
