Discover the Different Types of Carpet Fibers
Sep 30,2016 Diamond Carpet
Over the past few years the carpet market has dramatically changed, more and more synthetic carpet being sold over the traditional wool that was the fiber of choice for generations. Today over 80% of the carpets we sell are man made fibers.
The various fiber types have different characteristics which we will briefly explain, all have their benefits, our job is to make sure we find the right fit for youTo make this easier our samples have very clear concise information rating each carpet in 4 key areas: Fade, Stain, comfort and performance. By using this information it is very easy to compare different ranges and fiber types to get the combination of qualities and price that work for you.
Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN) carpets
The biggest selling fiber type, it’s very versatile and will perform in a wide variety of styles including low cost, lower weight products. It is resilient, fade and stain resistant and very durable and is the fiber of choice for many commercial applications.
We carry an expansive range of these products, from entry level to ultra luxurious soft touch cut piles
Wool carpets
Wool is a soft resilient fiber that can be made in a multitude of different styles. It will absorb moisture so can help regulate the humidity in your home, is a natural insulator and has excellent acoustic properties. It does have a tendency to fade more than solution dyed products and whilst naturally stain resistant does not carry warranties for either Stain or fade as most synthetic products do. Locally manufactured it is the only fully renewable biodegradable fiber type.
We carry a wide range of wool products, including textures and sisals not commonly found in synthetic offers.
Wool carpet Blends
The most common wool blend today is a combination of 80% wool and 20% synthetic. The reason for doing this is generally to reduce cost and most blends will be slightly less expensive than a comparative 100% wool product.
These products exhibit the same characteristics as wool, there may be some loss of sharpness in colour depending on the type of blend however in most cases it would hard to visually distinguish the difference between a blend and 100% wool.
Polypropylene carpets
Polypropylene the least expensive carpet fiber and has been sold mostly in budget end loop pile products. Tough and naturally fade and stain resistant, in its standard form it has a slightly harsh feel and has a tendency to flatten if not constructed correctly. It does not shed its fiber so is durable and a good option for rentals or those on a tight budget as it is inexpensive.
Widely used in Europe, the latest versions are becoming much softer and have a luxurious feel. It is still inexpensive and can be a good option for luxurious, good performing cut piles at low cost.
Polyester carpets
Polyester is a soft, naturally stain resistant fiber and in solution dyed form is very fade resistant. It is a fiber that needs to be constructed in higher weights to perform as it lacks resilience, however in the right construction can give good performance and a luxury feel at an affordable price.
A very big seller in the USA it is mostly seen here in higher weight cut piles.
Nylon carpets (overdyed)
These products are made by applying dye to white yarn so the colour is on the outside of the fiber rather than right through it. Think of a radish versus a carrot. They have the durability and other qualities of nylon but are less fade and stain resistant than solution dyed products which have superceded by them in NZ.
