Carpet Tiles Fiber Types

Carpet comes in several fiber types and each one has their pros and cons. So which one should you choose? Well, let’s break down each one to see which is best for each application. Olefin is one of the least expensive carpet fibers and is very common in cheaper, standard carpeting and carpet tile squares. This fiber is very strong and fade resistant, mildew resistant, stain resistant, as well as being resistant to abrasion and sunlight. All of these qualities make it great for commercial carpet tile applications. However, one major drawback to this fiber is that it does not hold up well to oils and can be stained by them. So the next time you go into an office building and you see that large black abyss of a stain that never goes away, you’ll know they must have went cheap and chosen Olefin. Polypropylene fibers are like Olefins and are on the lower end of the cost scale for carpet fibers. These fibers do very well in high traffic areas. Typically, you will see this type of carpet fiber in the entry ways to your neighborhood Target or Walmart. This fiber has all the benefits that Olefin has with the same drawback. When an oil based agent is spilled on it, the carpet tiles will become stained and it is very hard to clean it out. But since these are carpet tiles, replacement of the carpet tile is a breeze. Maybe that is why all of those entry ways are dark colored floors. Polyester, or PET as it is also called, has become one of the hottest fibers on the market. This is due to its low cost and durability. This fiber is very durable and resistant to water and staining, making it great for any residential or commercial application. Another great feature of this fiber is its high color retention and consistency. What this means for you is that when you have several solid colored carpet tiles of the same color next to each other, they will all look the same. This can’t be said for other fibers. Nylon is the most common fiber used in carpeting. This fiber is the ‘Cadillac’ of carpet fibers. The reason why it is so popular is the fact that nylon doesn’t burn, it melts. This makes it great for fire codes, which is why nylon carpet tiles are popular in commercial buildings, condos. and apartments. This fiber is also resistant to heat, insects, fungi, mold, mildew rot and many chemicals, so staining this carpet tile is very tough. Nylon is also colorfast and less absorbent than wool or cotton, which is great for homes with children or pets. One drawback to nylon is that there are batches in color. If you were to place multiple orders of the same floor over a period of time, you would get different shades of the carpet tile you purchased, so you could essentially have 50 shades of grey on your floor!
